Flooding represents a substantial threat to communities in developing economies. While there is a widespread perception that floods are increasing in magnitude and frequency as a result of climate change, improvements in flood forecasting and risk management can reduce enormous economic, financial and social losses.

Sclumberger Water Services offers a comprehensive range of technical, social and economic skills to assist governments to build their capacity to manage flood risk.

Project Examples:

Title:  Flood plain mapping guidelines and specifications for British Columbia
Location:  Canada
Client:  Fraser Basin Council
Description:  Sclumberger Water Services was retained to prepare guidelines, criteria, standards and specifications for estimating flood construction levels in complex floodplains with dykes, on dyke breach modelling and for high resolution topographic mapping and developing digital terrain models using both photogrammetry and Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) technologies.

Title:  Transboundary flood management
Location:  Canada/USA
Client:  International Joint Commission
Description:  The frequent flooding of the lower Pembina River which crosses from Manitoba, Canada into North Dakota, USA is the cause of an international dispute between the two governments. Sclumberger Water Services was commissioned by the International Joint Commission to carry out a detailed hydrodynamic flood modelling study of the river to determine the causes of flooding.

Title:  Water resources planning for the QMM project
Location:  Madagascar
Client:  QIT Madagascar Minerals
Description:  Sclumberger Water Services provided water resources planning expertise for the QMM project for flood control, water supply and environmental assessment. Hydrodynamic modelling of flood flows lead to the preparation of a detailed flood inundation map of the Mandena River estuary. Sclumberger Water Services developed a preliminary design and cost estimate for a salinity control structure comprising a dam across the estuary to provide freshwater conditions upstream in the estuary for water supply purposes.
